UPDATED WITH VOTE TOTAL
This just in from the RPV Advance – in a 48-26 vote, the State Central Committee has voted in favor of a primary over a convention for nominating our 2012 Senate candidates.
While it is still exceedingly early, the current conventional wisdom is that a primary favors the nomination of former Senator George Allen in a repeat of the 2006 election he narrowly lost to Jim Webb. While Allen has not yet declared himself a candidate, last night’s hospitality room hosted by Allen was the most well attended of all the various suites and areas, and many activists were sporting “Draft George Allen” stickers throughout the night. It seems likely now that the decision for a primary has been made, we may see a decision from Governor Allen soon.
As I noted in my earlier post, as a strong supporter of primaries, I am very pleased to see State Central making the right decision. I hope to have a breakdown of how the various units in Northern Virginia voted as that information becomes available.
A primary certainly will help Allen, but really hurt Marshall. Marshall has fewer bur more fervent supporters who would be more likely to attend a convention.
